What seeds can I plant for a fall garden?

Along about the first of July the garden centers box up all their remaining seeds and send them back to the seed companies. But you know as a educated and well informed gardener that the season is far from over. In fact some of the best vegetables come from the fall garden.

I just got my fall seed order from Johnny's seeds in Maine. Let's talk about what you can plant from seed that will thrive in the fall.  Here is my top 10 list.

  1. Carrots - fall carrots are amazing. Start in July
  2. Lettuce - start every three weeks for a season long supply. Last crop in early September.
  3. Spinach - start every three weeks for a season long supply. Last crop in late September.
  4. Beets - Start in early July for fall and winter beets.
  5. Swiss chard - start in July for fall crop
  6. Onions - Green onions. Start in July/August. Some will overwinter. Experiment.
  7. Arugula - Loves fall weather. Start any time.
  8. Parsnips - Start before the first of July to allow enough time to reach full sized.
  9. Green Beans - Plant until July 15th
  10. Zucchini and patty pan - Plant until July 15th
