There are several approaches for watering plants in pots depending on the number and size...

For a few large pots just watering 2-3 times a week is about right and can be done with a container.

If the pots are small you might need to water every day.

You can get drip irrigation tubes if you have lots of pots and they can pretty much take care of themselves. You can even put it on a timer.

If you have to be gone for a long weekend you can put your pots in a  shallow container with 2-4 inches of water in it. The plants will absorb what they need with out being over watered. A child's wading pool works well for several plants.

Of course the best water is to leave your veggies in pots out in the rain!
