Before Children There was Music, A Mothers Day Tribute for Lisa

There are common threads in marriage that transcend all others. These are typically things like our love for each other and our faith in God. One of these things in our marriage is music, not because it is more important than love or faith, but because it is part of the beautiful tapestry of our relationship and it is near to our heart.

Let me explain...

Lisa has been the musical driving force in our family. For example, Andrea is a music education major and Jenna is going to major in music. Their love for music would not have happen without Lisa's influence.

For Mothers Day I thought it would be fitting to recognize this golden thread of music in our home.

I probably didn't realize how deep Lisa's love for music was until we had been married quite a while but here are some of the clues.
  1. She surprised me at our wedding by singing me a solo during the service, because before children there was music.
  2. We had to stop at a famous Jazz joint during our honeymoon in New Orleans, because before children there was music.
  3. As a wedding gift her parents gave us a very nice piano, which is still going strong, because before children there was music.
  4. She played trombone in the orchestra at church, because before children there was music.
  5. We had a membership at the Rochester Civic Theatre and musicals were one of her favorites, because before children there was music.
  6. She would often accompany choirs, she has done this since high school, and most recently for Crossroads College, because before children there was music.
  7. She would often spend evenings playing the piano just because it made her happy. I liked to listen, because before children there was music.
  8. When the children came along I liked to sing with them at bed time and they seemed to like that too. But all their formal music training was Lisa's doing, because before children there was music.
  9. Children's piano, Trombone, Flute and Baritone all excelled because of her love, for instrument, orchestra and jazz, because before children there was music.
  10. 10 years in Honors Choirs were on the path to a life long love of music for two young ladies, because before children there was music.
  11. She recently played music for the Franklin Graham Children's Heart Project at the Mayo Clinic, because before children there was music.
  12. She recently completed a two year course in music theory, just for fun, because before children there was music.
The journey continues as mother and wife...because before children there was music.

Happy Mother's Day Lisa!
