A Trick For Keeping The Deer Out

Deer are creatures of habit. Sometimes you can train them to ignore areas of sensitive plants.

I like to do this with an electric fence early in the season before there are garden plants they'd like to eat.

Sometimes they get a taste for your beans or carrots and then even an electric fence may not keep them out.

Unless you apply this trick...

Deer have very poor stereoscopic depth perception because of the position of their eyes on their head.

So if you string a second electric fence wire about three feet from the first wire, the deer will not jump the two wires, because they can't tell where they will land.

Brings new meaning to the phrase "look before you leap"

I had deer getting into the carrots last summer and did this second wire trick and the thieving stopped.
