Our green onions are ready in the garden. I planted some Walla Walla Sweet onions for our first onions of the year.
The advantages of the Walla Walla onions are...
they are very sweet.
The typical green onions are mild with less of the sulfur compounds. But I wouldn't describe them as sweet.
We plant the Walla Walla onions in a four inch thick layer of compost that has very low levels of sulfur and lets the sweetness of the Walla Walla onion shine through.
We will have baseball sized Walla Wallas by the end of May, but for now enjoy the scallion sized sweetness.
